Those purple Rich Dad books

Most of us have heard of the Kiyosaki pair, or at least of Robert Kiyosaki, who has churned out so many Rich Dad books in the past decade that it’s hard to keep up. I’ve read Rich Dad Poor Dad and I’ve read a couple of others, but they didn’t inspire me past the first flush of excitement to actually do anything.

BUT his wife Kim has emerged from the shadows, and ta-dah, she invests too! Maybe no surprise there. She’s also written a purple book, called Rich Woman. Well, my inner grammar nazi could see immediately that the book had not been lovingly subbed and I spotted several errors in it. But still, she said some stuff that made me think. And do more than think, actually sit down, take stock of my finances and make a Plan. This shiny new blog is part of that Plan.

From the entire book, the bits that made most sense to me were these (paraphrased)…

Want to become a Rich Woman?

1. Before anything else, find your Big Reason for wanting to be rich. Once you find that, it’ll keep you steadfast on your financial path.
2. In a regular job, the better you do the harder you have to work. When investing, the better you do, the less you have to work.
3. Don’t ever rely on anyone - husband, government, company etc - to fund your financial future. This is a big trap many women fall into and their later years come as a shock.
4. Empower yourself by learning about money. It’s not just a topic for men. In fact, women are often better at investing.
5. Find an investment option - property, stocks etc - that interests you.

No 3. Don’t rely on anyone. I did and boy am I regretting it now. I’m 55 and unable to work full time, have no savings apart from a (very) few thousand in My superannuation savings which can’t be accessed until I’m legally able to retire.
