Confession

Forgive me, Bank Account, for I have sinned. This is my first confession, but far from my first misdemeanour.

Today I was browsing the MoMA Design Store in the Village. It is full of wonderful knick-knacks; pens, wallets, vases, jewellery and umbrellas. In fact, I was particularly taken with a special brolly that, when opened, reveals a blue sky pattern underneath. So when it’s raining you can look up and see cheerful weather.

What a neat idea, I thought. I looked at the price tag: $35. Well, that’s not too bad for a design umbrella, I reasoned. The rest of the conversation with myself went like this:

Good Me: I already have an umbrella.
Bad Me: Not one with a blue sky pattern!
Good Me: But I don’t ‘need’ it.
Bad Me: But it’s so pretty… go on, treat yourself. You’re shopping in the Village. You didn’t buy anything yesterday.
Good Me: But I’ve been reading about saving and investing and this really isn’t sensible…
Bad Me: Oh, shut up and buy the thing.

So I did. And now I feel really guilty, which is interesting. It’s a sign that I’m changing and becoming more aware of the real cost of things. Oh well, I’m hopping back on the wagon.
