10 Reasons I Won’t Give Up Coffee

I read a few ‘frugal’ blogs that write about counting your change and saving for a better life. All very thought-provoking and helpful, but my fur rises when anyone mentions giving up coffee, or almost worse, switching to that hideous filter crap. I know, I’m a coffee snob. I started drinking it when I worked all hours in a newsroom with rampaging lunatics and have been hooked ever since. So below are my 10 reasons to keep drinking the stuff.

1. It’s a legal, safe high. I can do it in public, without getting arrested. Bonus!
2. It makes me more productive. I work faster, I get more done. I get promoted. I quit my job to blog. Hrm.
3. It tastes good. Unless that 16-year-old nihilist at Starbucks is on the machine.
4. I don’t order silly coffees. No soy-decaf-double-mocha-caramel-dreamy for me, thanks.
5. It makes me more social. I even get a little chatty sometimes. Coffee’s a social and intellectual lubricant: think of the famous Austrians sipping it and waxing philosophical in their Vienna coffee houses.
6. I could give up anytime. I could, I swear. Caffeine-withdrawal headaches aside.
7. The money I’d save if I quit would only go on caffeine patches. Or lots and lots of tea.
8. It’s good for you! Look, the internet says so.
9. There are worse vices. I could read O Magazine.
10. Sleep is overrated.

What about you? Are you a committed intaker of coffee? Or are you adding that $2.50 a day to your retirement fund?

Let me calculate… 2.50 dollars per day make 70 dollars per month, which I could sock away into a retirement fund at a 8 % interest rate, which would yield a whooping balance of 133K dollars!

Mmm…. No. Italian roast for me, thanks.

Yeah, well, I never said it was a money-saving habit…

Make that 2 for Italian roast!

But I do like lattes. Since they are expensive at the coffee shop, I have an espresso machine and make my own. It’s a compromise between loving coffee and saving a few bucks.

Very sensible Andrew. I would do that too if I wasn’t so nomadic. I do like making my own espresso - all that banging about and milk frothing is quite cathartic.
