How To Make 4c a Week From Your Blog
For the past week I’ve been reading blogs about making money online. I’ve learned that the way to make money online is to blog about making money online. People want answers, so they visit these blogs and leave hundreds of comments thanking the writer for their wise posts. Traffic goes up, ads are clicked on and suddenly the writer’s making even more money! So they blog about that. And so on. Some are making hundreds of dollars a day from this sort of activity.
But I’m not.
You might be skeptical about that. You might be thinking, “Oh come on, you’re making money, you just don’t want to share your secret with us.” Well, to prove you wrong I’m going to paste my week’s earnings from AdSense here:
![]()
There, you see? I made 4c in one week! I could beg on the street and make more in an hour. But I’ve been at my desk networking, reading, writing, optimizing, cropping, coding, downloading, uploading, wiping the sweat from my brow… and I’ve made 4c.
So, in the name of blogging, I’m going to share my secrets of how you too can make 4c a week.
1. Have fewer than 100 visitors.
There are billions of people in the world but you don’t want them all visiting your site. Aim for around 65.
2. Have some ads that nobody clicks on.
Everybody has ads and affiliate links on their sites these days but it’s crucial they only receive one click every 2-3 days. See tip #1 above for how to achieve this.
3. Join networking sites that no one actually uses.
Sign up for all the blog networking sites. This will generate some traffic, maybe 10 visits a day. That’s enough for your 4c.
4. Digg your articles but don’t let anyone else Digg them.
1 Digg, that’s enough to generate two or three visitors out of pity.
5. Subscribe to all the successful blogs.
Then leave comments like, “Great post, thanks!” and link to your url. I’ve had at least three visits this way.
6. Instead of blogging, just keep checking your stats and income.
That day when you make 1c will encourage you to keep going.
7. Write about what you had for breakfast.
You’d think no one would care, but that’s not true. At least two people will care.
8. Don’t do any of those PayPerPost deals.
Those payment-for-blogging deals may look like a good idea, but they’ll mostly pay a minimum of $5 per post. That far exceeds your goal of 4c a week. Five dollars a day is just extravagant.
9. Attend blogger conventions and network with people already making 4c a week.
Those are the people you can really learn from. It takes an awesome amount of discipline and intelligence to achieve that amount.
10. Don’t give up.
I know it’s easy to sit on that 3c a week and think, “I’ll never make it.” But I have and you will, too! Now excuse me while I go and collect my paycheck.

Hahahha Nice Tips
Great Article
May 12th, 2007 at 6:51 pmMy Blog is as old as your is
I make nearly 12 dollar per day
May 12th, 2007 at 6:52 pmDj Flush: $12 a day is far too much. If you followed my tips you could get it down to 4c a week!
May 12th, 2007 at 9:11 pmThis is the funniest thing I’ve seen! You can include my testimonial about the effectiveness of all 10 tips. I’ve followed them exactly and have gotten the same results. Six figure blogging is easy. Earning 4 cents a week is hard work.
May 14th, 2007 at 3:11 pmI’m doing something wrong. I made 7c just today alone. I might even make 10 in the whole week..lol
May 14th, 2007 at 3:22 pmThanks Brett. Maybe we should start an elite 4c Bloggers’ Club.
May 14th, 2007 at 3:27 pm[…] of a great personal finance blog called Rich Minx. (What a great name!) The Rich Minx has written a hilariously insightful post on how to earn 4 cents a week from Adsense. As a low income Adsense user, I was nodding my head during the entire post saying to myself […]
May 14th, 2007 at 3:28 pmFreeBlogThing: That’s terrible… you have to stay focused! Aim for six more cents this month and you’ll be back on track.
May 14th, 2007 at 3:30 pmOooh. I’m a complete failure…. It just went up to $1.79
May 14th, 2007 at 4:25 pmHow do I stop this and get back on track now?
Maybe if I delete the websites for a couple of months?
Any other suggestions?
I don’t know quite how I got it all so wrong today. At this rate I could be considered successful. That would never do.
Well, you came to the right place for advice. Pausing your sites is the only way to go. Then turn out the lights and just sit quietly in the dark for awhile until your traffic stabilizes.
Although I am in danger of breaking my own rules. This article’s had a whopping 3 Diggs now! That could raise profits by at least a cent.

May 14th, 2007 at 10:55 pmHi Rich
I thought this was a great post. Gave it a Digg and a stumble as well as a trackback which will be appearing shortly.
However I am most impressed with your share this button that pulls up all of the different social sites. Did you develop that or is it a plugin that you are using?
Scott
May 15th, 2007 at 1:12 amThanks guys.
Scott: The share this button is a WordPress bookmarking plugin. Let me know if you need more details.

May 15th, 2007 at 2:00 pmGreat post, thanks!
I achieved this without even reading your tips; I guess I’m just a natural talent.
May 15th, 2007 at 2:09 pmThanks for linking to me, Savvy Affiliate.
Martial Development: Excellent, keep it up! Maybe it really is time to start the 4c Bloggers’ Club, there seem to be enough potential members.
May 15th, 2007 at 2:14 pmDarn, in April I just missed the goal. My site was live for just the last two weeks of that month and I made 11 cents.
May 15th, 2007 at 3:03 pmFive and a half cents a week is pretty good Delani. I guess maintaining that figure as your traffic grows will be the challenge.
May 15th, 2007 at 3:10 pmLoved your post! I wrote about my dog dying and I think one person read it…but I didn’t make anywhere near 4c? I guess that means it was a good post, huh? Lord knows I wouldn’t want to write about something that would bring people in droves, pointing and clicking all over my page! I’ve got bandwidth restrictions I need to worry about you know?
(By the way…I don’t mean to make light of my dog dying for those of you that think I’m being cruel. I did really love my dog) Richminx…I think you will do just fine!
May 15th, 2007 at 4:12 pmIf you start that 4c club, let me know…I’m in!
Chris
I literally laughed out loud when I read this! Hilarious! I’m giving this a stumble and digg as well. You crack me up!

Maybe you should take some tips from me, I am raking in a whole $3.50 from adsense (after 6 monhts!) LOL. I love your humor!
May 21st, 2007 at 5:50 pmThanks Ashley! The funniest bit will be when I finally earn that first $100 check from Google. I am up to $70 - after three years! Although to be fair this is the first blog I’ve really made an effort to promote. The other ones were just personal ramblings.
May 21st, 2007 at 5:55 pmI really love this article! I think it’s my favorite of your posts.
May 22nd, 2007 at 10:58 amI saw your guest post at ryanshamus.com and followed you here and loved this article!
I stumbled it and blinked it for some link love.
Have you thought about adding some audio to your blog?
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:47 pmHi David, thanks for the Stumble! I must admit I don’t know what a Blink is so will have to check it out.
Audio: No, no, no, I can’t stand the sound of my own voice! And I’m a Kiwi so I pronounce things like The Simpsons as ‘The Sumsums’.
Or did you mean audio from other people?
May 22nd, 2007 at 5:16 pmHa! I loved it! I’m in the same boat — writing for fun, but wondering why I’m only at $2.50 after 4 months of it!
According to
May 25th, 2007 at 12:32 amhttp://www.business-opportunities.biz/projects/how-much-is-your-blog-worth/
your web site is worth over $13,000 while mine is still $0. Beat that!
Wow, you’re right! $13,500 to be specific. Okay, who wants it?
May 25th, 2007 at 8:09 amI taped four pennies above my bed so I could visualize my life as if I had 4c.
Great article.
May 26th, 2007 at 2:20 pmI was doing just fine, maybe too fine. Last week I made zero, the week before I made zero, but I’m afraid this week I blew it. It’s only tuesday and I’ve already made 2$….. must have done something that changed everything…. dammit
May 28th, 2007 at 9:30 amwait…. it’s worse than I thought…. it’s only Monday
What the heck!!!
May 28th, 2007 at 9:42 amSteve, you need to shut your site down until the end of the week. Just kidding. Seriously though, I was quite proud of my 4c a week when I wrote this but I’ve since learned that some people make even more than that. So I’m aiming for 5c now. I know, it’s unrealistic but you have to reach for the stars or you’ll swim with the fishes. Or something.
May 28th, 2007 at 9:47 amAwesome post! So true. This is roughly how much I make with my German-language blog about life in the U.S. (Shona, you may find that interesting, so click on my name!
To be honest, I use AdWords mostly to see how many page views I have. If it makes a few cents, fine. The key to making money through blogging is to sell/promote your own products or services through your blog. AdWords should only be a secondary stream of income. (Btw, if you want to make some money with your blog, you should write some posts about insurances, mortgages and real estate. Keyword bids for those topics are pretty high.)
May 30th, 2007 at 3:10 pmHi Kai, Interesting blog! Good practice for my rusty German
I know those keywords are valuable, but a post from me about real estate or mortgages would be very dull indeed because I have little experience in that area yet. Maybe when my income is higher than 4c I’ll get a house.
May 31st, 2007 at 10:11 amYou left off one really important one. This should be number 0.
Put enough ads and other extraneous stuff on your otherwise text-only page that it takes 74.89 seconds to load over dial-up.
Yep, that’s what this page took to load. Yep, some of us are still stuck on dial-up. I usually close a site after 60 seconds. Even on broadband, all that scripting and off-site URL loading slows things considerably.
If you want to fail miserably at your 4c/day goal, I suggest one small AdSense strip per page and leave it at that.

John, thanks for letting me know. It must be the new header graphic I added a few days ago. I’ll fix it. However, 2% of visitors open this site via a dialup connection so I’m not losing sleep over it.
June 16th, 2007 at 9:53 amMaybe missing all those dial-up folks is the key to achieving your 4c/day goal
Seriously, as a recently retired road warrior, I can tell you that sites that require dozens to hundreds of connection nail-ups are relatively slow over broadband but painfully slow over satellite internet, public WiFi, EVDO (cellular internet) and a whole variety of other connection methods.
I was a broadband “early adopter” and had it for years until I moved up here to live on the right hand of God
Now I’m glad to have phone service. There’ll be satellite internet just as soon as I can get it installed but from experience I know that sites like this will still load slow.
Not to make too big a deal out of it (I’m wordy
but page load time really is an issue with a lot of folks. Remember what made Google the monster it is today? Remember how everyone gushed about the fast page loads, compared to the blivet-packed pages of the competitors?
I get an email or two a month thanking me for my fast website at http://www.neon-john.com. I’m still working on my blog to get it that fast. I should note too, that while I’m certainly not going to live on what my barely-3-week-old blog is making, I AM failing miserably at the 4c/day goal
Have a good ‘un,

Dammn CoooL tips
June 17th, 2007 at 9:17 amI’ll have to implement some of these, but I’d like to pass on 2 gems that have proven to be extremely successful on my blog.
1. Remove all advertising
2. Rarely ever update
By adding both of these to your repertoire, you’re guaranteed to earn even less than you’re earning now in no time!
June 17th, 2007 at 8:34 pmThanks Ben!
YFBFB: Brilliant ideas. How did I miss those?
June 18th, 2007 at 8:41 amMinx- That’s why I’m your favorite blogger’s favorite blogger. I have now made more comments on your blog than updates on mine in the last month. Ideas are great, but it’s all about execution. Got to practice what you preach.
Keep up the lousy work!
June 18th, 2007 at 10:05 amIt’s pretty easy to get down and out when you look at the revenue weeks of hard work have created and wonder what value you could have gotten for that time on the open market, but this entry was humorous and enjoyable!
June 29th, 2007 at 7:45 pmThanks Brandon. And don’t give up, I’ve made it to double figures now! Hedge fund, here I come!
June 30th, 2007 at 12:28 pmAdSense in general doesn’t perform well on blogs about “making money”. Why? Part of the reason is that most of the people reading your blog already know about AdSense so they are unlikely to click on those ads. This is the reason I stopped using AdSense on my blog about internet marketing a long time ago.
Once you get your blog to PR4 or better, go for Text Link Ads. I think that you’ll find that it’ll give you better results.
July 1st, 2007 at 9:27 pmThanks for the tip. Can’t wait for my first page rank!
July 1st, 2007 at 9:46 pmPlease submit this to one of my carnivals, I’m still smiling. jon
July 8th, 2007 at 5:04 pmHm i must go down from $30+ a day to 4c
. I must say I am very impressed with your blog i like it in deed and I can’t imagine you make only 4c,
how about you bring some stumble upon traffic ? .
I found you by searching keyword “make money” and you ware my first blog.!
Very Nice -Borat
July 16th, 2007 at 10:40 amHi Majo,
This post was written a few months ago so I am making more than 4c a week now but nowhere near $30 a day! How do you do it?
July 16th, 2007 at 1:11 pmI was roaring with laughter while I was reading this. You need to be doing stand-up and get famous (’cuse me - more famous). I want to share this with everyone I know. I just have one question. “You can make money with a blog?” Wow! What a concept!
July 26th, 2007 at 7:13 amI can’t believe I didn’t make it to your site before today … that is great!

September 4th, 2007 at 1:30 pmthis is comment 55.
I guess your other 10 readers are flakes ;-P
November 3rd, 2007 at 3:23 pmThe stumble upon toolbar was worth every penny! This is probably the best blog post I’ve read all month. I’m just a few months late to the party… heh. Keep up the good work. You got yourself a new reader.
November 8th, 2007 at 9:10 pmBest post ever, i laughed my ass off.
November 8th, 2007 at 10:12 pmThanks guys. Wow, this is the blog post that keeps on giving. I might have to write a sequel
November 9th, 2007 at 7:13 pmI thought I’d revisit and post my results…
January 13th, 2008 at 3:43 amnot good; as a matter of fact I was going way over .04, and it was giving me stress headaches.
I finally pulled all the Adsense and Google referral code off the site and I’m sleeping better now.
Thanks again,
Stephan
Stephan, thanks for the update and I’m pleased to hear you’re getting a good night’s sleep. However, removing all your code is a drastic move and one which won’t help you in your quest for 4c. Have you considered aiming for less valuable keywords?
January 13th, 2008 at 10:27 amI know I’m several months behind, but did want to say this is one of the first blogs I’ve actually laughed out loud at… Nice job! Stumbled and RSS’d - keep me laughing!
April 25th, 2008 at 3:34 pmits been almost one year and now I wonder how you doing? still between $30 per day? or more?
btw hows blogging overall?
April 25th, 2008 at 5:18 pmIntersting Post!!A welcome change from “i make 200$ a day” types. But still, 4c a week sounds meak.Is there any sarcasm put in, cos i think for the hardwork you have put in on the site,4c wont even qualify for spare change
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:13 pmIt has been awhile since you posted this and could you give us an update. Did you make it to the coveted 5c a day.
I do apologize for the fact that after all your hard work of making he 4c a day people started stumbling, digging, blinking and all the other things they have done to destroy your exemplary record.
Oh by the way Adsense called and said if you would send them a postage paid return addressed envelope they would mail you a check for your 4c.
