Farewell, New York
Dear New York,
It’s time for me to say goodbye now. It’s been two months, and you’re not exactly the cheapest city in the world. But I think we’ve had fun together. Remember that first day on the tour bus? The wind was freezing and made my nose ache, but the lights were flashing and you looked so new and familiar all at once.
But a lot’s changed since then. There’s so much more to you than the clomping horses in Central Park, the honking yellow cabs, the chaos of Times Square and snobby Fifth Avenue shops. You’ve introduced me to new people, allowed me to eavesdrop on the craziest conversations I’ve ever heard, fed me exotic dishes, taken me out to the best performances and walked me home after late nights in strange bars.
I’ve been a lot of places, but I’ve never met anyone quite like you: complex, moody and extrovert all at once.
I’m moving on to San Francisco now. Don’t be sad. You knew this was only a short-term thing. Will we stay in touch? I don’t know. You’ll be too busy to write. But I’ve got photos of us together. I’ll look at them and remember you as you are right at this moment, here in the summer of ‘07 (insert Bryan Adams riff here).

That’s one of the nicest farewell notes to the city, I’ve ever read.
