Video Blogging: Would You Try It?
I have a new Mac. I’m a Mac! Actually I’d rather be the PC character because he’s cooler but I like my Mac. It’s white and has handy things like a webcam.
So far I’ve used my webcam for silly Skype conversations and checking my hair and that’s it, but I’ve been thinking about doing a video blog post for the hell of it.
Why video blogging?
- Well, it’s good if you have an personal advice blog like Ask Dan and Jennifer who are so brave with their sex-and-relationship frankness (here is their answer to your swinging vs. polyamory question). I don’t have an advice blog though.
- It would be good for illustrating how-to posts for people who prefer visuals to text instructions.
- Readers seemed to like it when Gospel Rhys had a go.
- It is a little bit more personal than an avatar. Well, it’s a lot more personal: you see the blogger’s mannerisms, hear their voice, their intonation… it’s all quite revealing, actually.
- Get your message across via a performance vs. text if you are a better speaker than writer, and have a knack with film and editing. Add effects, add music.
Why not video blogging?
- Because you can risk looking like a gimp. Also, I tend to look awfully pale. Stage makeup required?
- Some animation is required (energy, not cartoons). Challenging for introverts.
- The simplest video innocently recorded in your garage can come back to haunt you again and again. And that’s not even mentioning the Paris Hilton sex tape.
- There are bound to be critical reviews and rotten tomatoes. “Your butt looks big!…Call that a love scene?” etc.
So have you tried video blogging, or would you? How about… I’ll do it if you will!

Sure i will try the video blog thing if you can help me get a sponsor for it! I am willing to put myself out there but I want to be compensated for it. I would not do any nudity though for everyone’s sake!
Where would you distribute this video content? On youtube or would you rather create your own channel?
when I go to Italy next time I plan on filming each day and putting it up on the web, with some observations of what I saw. Perhaps something like Anthony Bourdain, I like the way he views traveling and we have similiar tastes.
So to answer your question yes I am going to do it.
July 19th, 2007 at 6:51 pmVideo blogging would be perfect when you’re on the road.
I was thinking more of the occasional video blog post here to keep things fresh.
July 19th, 2007 at 8:07 pmPlus, you would help me win a bet with someone that there are actual girls on the Internets.
July 19th, 2007 at 9:00 pmOh yeah I hadn’t thought of that - video blogging is proof you’re a real live blogger.
Does the bet involve money? Would I get a cut?
July 19th, 2007 at 9:10 pmHey, I’ll throw down on that one!
How much? Sign me up!
July 19th, 2007 at 10:26 pmVideo blogging… well you are requiring that someone listen to you for a fixed amount of time so that they can get the whole message that you are giving them, unlike a written post where they might be able to scan and pick up the info that they are really concerned with. I think that the time investment is worth the more personal feel that may attract more viewers/readers. When trying to make your blog your business it is best to keep readers coming back wanting more. I’m looking into a conference about making money with blogging. Have you heard of PostieCon? Seems like a cool opportunity to meet these famous bloggers face to face.
July 20th, 2007 at 5:43 amMinx, I made one video that I posted to YouTube a while back to mixed reviews. I’m loathe to “produce” (if you can call it that) another one for all of the con reasons you listed above.
July 20th, 2007 at 7:18 amThat was a cracking post that, though I did get a hell of a lot of stick from my mates when I posted it. Oh well, the traffic was worth it.
Incidentally, that was my 8th time in trying, without looking like a total idiot. It was a hand held camera, and my arm hurt towards the end.
I appeared in a video blog for Han too, she said her readers thought I sounded like chewbacca!
July 20th, 2007 at 8:44 amHi Dani, I’d love to go to PostieCon but I’ll be a bit far away by the time it happens. Maybe the next one. Are you going?
Mike, what was the video about? Have you got the link? (I’ll be nice
)
Rhys, if I do a video post there will definitely be multiple takes. Chewbacca! Hahaha. God knows what people would think of my accent. Might need subtitles.
Maybe we should have a Video Blogging Day where everyone who wants to can have a go.
July 20th, 2007 at 10:31 ami would definitely try the video blogging at some point. take shoemoney for instance… it just has to be spun the right way so that people will want to watch it. and as long as you know what you’re talking about, you’re all good. the biggest benefits are 1. longer per-visitor time spent on your site, and 2. it could create a viral buzz. go for it! hey, maybe we could create video blog reviews…first blogger does video 1, next blogger does video 2, etc. that could be pretty crazy!
lol just a thought that crossed my mind…
July 20th, 2007 at 1:45 pmYeah I think I will try and make this into some kind of buzz/viral thing… maybe with Q&As… will put my thinking cap on and post an update soon!
July 20th, 2007 at 1:51 pmI wouldn’t try video blogging because I prefer to remain anonymous. Maybe I would set up a personal blog with video blogging. However, I’m still a PC character….
