You’re So Far Away From Me: Does Location Matter?

Please excuse the slight erratic-ness of posting times while I get my head around the new time difference. I am now 17 hours ahead of New Yorkers. I am also jetlagged so wake up at 4am. I appear upside-down to Europeans. All AdSense ads I see are now displaying New Zealand ads thanks to cunning geotargeting. It’s madness down the rabbit hole.

Still, I am able to overcome these mountainous obstacles and keep blogging, even while upside-down.

But I wonder: will my physical distance affect my mostly US-based readership? I love my five subscribers; I would hate to lose them over something so small as a 7000-mile gap and the Pacific Ocean.

I take heart that ProBlogger Darren Rowse lives in Australia, which is also not in America, and he has at least as many subscribers as me, if not more. At the NY ProBlogger Meetup I remember asking him how he managed the time difference and he said he timestamped his posts. Genius!

But pressing questions remain.

  • How many Big Bloggers live outside the US?
  • Does nationality matter?
  • When is the best time to publish a post?
  • Will Harry Potter survive, or will Voldemort?

I know Darren is not a US blogger and he live outside US. And no, nationality doesn’t matter, at least for me. :p

  2. Darren Says:

hehe - it’s weird getting used to the time difference going one way or the other.

there are definite advantages of being away from the US but some challenges as well. Get used to advanced posting and you’ll be fine :-)

  3. Pete W Says:

    1 - Not many
    2 - Not really
3 - Doesn’t matter, but consider timing for Digg and Reddit submissions
4 - Neville goes berserk and kills everyone. Timid geek rage!!!

I hope you keep blogging because I love your blog…and I would miss your humor. I agree that time stamping would be a good thing. Make sure there is a morning post (for when I first get to work), and then one around 2 p.m. (when I’m really bored). All about me…

Well to answer these questions let’s see:

    1. You really do not know how may actually live outside the United States as we all live in a cyberspace world anyways and it really makes no significant difference.
    2. Absolutely not, nationality, skin color, hair color, eye color or even the size of your feet do not matter when you are a blogger. Just if you can spell correctly and add some humor into each and everyday to make our lives just that much easier.
    3. The best time to publish a post is when you are finished writing it. Make sure you finished writing it though as publishing a post half way is just no good and what ever you do don’t…
    4. Harry who?

  6. Bloggrrl Says:

I am up at all hours these days, so time doesn’t make a difference to me, although I have wondered about my own posting times as well. As far as living in New Zealand, one of the most attractive things about the Internet is the opportunity to escape a solely US perspective.

    1. I have noticed that the UK is home to the personal bloggers who make it big (Scaryduck, Girl With a One Track Mind, Blood Sweat and Tea), people with interesting lives or a way to make their lives interesting. We have 0 “Probloggers” type bloggers.

    2. Not really, though my dry Monty Python esque wit would look a bit silly coming from an American ;)

    3. I publish mine at 6am GMT, so I get the Aussie Rush :)

    4. Neither do. Hermionie kills them to death.

  8. Jon Symons Says:

I attempt to publish at 7am Eastern Standard (NYC) time. That way my posts are ready and waiting when all the bored cube-dwellers hit the office.

    Thanks, Chee.

Darren: I will! If only I could add/subtract…

Pete: That’s hilarious! I laughed out loud at 5am. ‘Bowling for Hogwarts’? (Ooh, took it too far..)

Thanks SavingDiva. What’s your timezone and work arrival estimate? :)

Richard, foot size totally matters. How can you trust a blogger with small feet?

Bloggrrl: Your insomnia seems to work well for your traffic levels. I think I might have to sleep less.

Rhys: I don’t blame her, she never gets any of the credit! If I was her I’d hook up with Snape, age difference be Horcruxed.

    Jon: Ah yes, the Doozers…
