Won’t Somebody Please Think Of The Animals?
With so many people asking for money and worthy fundraising organizations, how do you decide where to send your donations (if anywhere)?
I tend to stick with animals. As a kid I used to do voluntary work at the local RSPCA, which involved a few icky chores like cleaning out litter trays, but I also got to take the dogs for a walk and play with the kittens (that’s me on the right, in the pic
). These days I’m less hands-on because I move around a lot, but I still donate a monthly amount to them, which goes towards animal vaccinations and food.
I also ‘adopt’ a zoo animal once a year. The first one I sponsored was called Ned, a serval kitten. Servals come from Africa and look like regular cats except they’re larger and with big ears on a small head. Young Ned had been rejected by his mother and, once his mournful photo was published in the local paper, received a swamp of ‘adoptions’. Since then I’ve adopted meerkats, orangutan and red pandas.
Apart from the fact that the cuter animals tend to get more attention, I think it’s a great way to help zoos, which have become much more about preserving endangered species and mimicking their natural environments than forcing the animals to perform tricks and shoving them in tiny cages. Some still have a way to go, though.
If you do want to sponsor an animal I’d suggest doing it locally so you can keep an eye on where the money goes, or at least donate to a well-known organization like the WWF, and do a bit of reading first.
What causes do you support? Or do you put yourself up for adoption. ![]()

I have come across some sites for animal lovers - http://stuffonmycat.com and http://stuffonmymutt.com .
The other is a dog lover’s blog since 1993 - http://frisket.org.
And an Indian community Social Networking site - http://www.petnopolis.com where it is build around pet lover’s, and people who have questions about the pets and are generally looking for a mate for their pets.
These are not exactly a online adoption websites, but I thought this might interest you!!
I have a dog - Casper, 2 turltes - Amy and Max and not 4 fish out of 7.
September 23rd, 2007 at 9:39 amI’m not sure if you meant animal causes or causes in general, but being a survivor myself, I support the NSPCC - an agency that champions the protection of children from abuse.
take care…

I’m more of a people supporter, I have to say. Animals are cool and all but my buck will go towards helping humans every time.
I remember growing up my dad would jokingly rant about the save the whales programs. He wanted to start a cause to save the plankton.
September 24th, 2007 at 2:43 amI normally prefer to help organisations such as those who bring medical aids to war or poor zones (Medicien Sans Frontiers, Emergeny, etc) or organisations who help kids.
September 24th, 2007 at 9:04 pmI think of the animals all the time.
I wonder why it is okay to eat Cow but not Cat.
Why when I tell people that I loved to go shooting Kangaroos and then have an outdoor bbq with them, people wince!
I love my animals, even better with bbq sauce and a nice Caesar Salad on the side.
September 25th, 2007 at 12:46 amThat is evil! You BBQ Skippy? Noooooo….
