Yes, it’s true, I’m not really 21.

That’s me on the right on my fourth birthday. I will not be similarly attired this year, nor will I have the same haircut (ah, the ’80s…).

I have mixed feelings about this birthday. On the one hand, turning 30 is a milestone that serves as a reminder of the inexorable march of Time. And it’s made me feel a bit reflective: have I achieved much? am I grown-up enough? should I buy a house/dog now? a walking frame? adopt an orphan overseas? start writing letters of complaint to newspapers?

On the other hand, I’m very pleased to have made it this far in more or less one piece, I’m proud of – almost – everything I did in my 20s (can’t say I did much before that) and am definitely excited about the future.

And I would not want to be 20 again. Although it was easier to stay up all night.
